The problem is that most Instagram grid makers perform a basic mathematical crop: they divide your image into equal-width columns at exact pixel boundaries.

Those pixel boundaries land right inside the gap zone. So when Instagram adds its 3px gap, it's cutting into your image content — and you see a visible seam. This is especially noticeable on panoramic grids where the image is supposed to flow seamlessly across all posts.

Instagram's uploader frequently offers a square (1:1) crop by default — and accepting it cuts 135 pixels off each side of a 1080×1350 tile. That is far more than the correction allows for, so the compensation is thrown away entirely and the seams reappear, through no fault of the split itself.
